Don's first “taste” of Paso Robles was not a particularly pleasing one. It was during the summer of 1968, when he attended the first of many two-week active duty training “summer camps” as part of the U.S. Army Reserves, at Camp Roberts, about 10 miles north of Paso Robles. Paso Robles itself was simply hot and desolate – not an exciting place to go to during off-hours. When he completed his service in 1974, Don vowed never to return to the area. But as the saying goes – “never say never.” As he began to enjoy his retirement in the late 1990s, Don and his wife started exploring the nearby developing wine country of California’s Central Coast – including Paso Robles. Things had changed in Paso. Don and Lynn were quickly seduced by the now inviting area, the friendly people and the wines. Paso was beginning to establish itself as a serious wine destination, and Don began meeting many of the new, up-and-coming winemakers. Over time, those relationships developed into deep friendships – and Don has been there over the years, watching, as so many of those winemakers have become some of the most prolific, premium, trend setting wine producers in the region, and California. About a decade ago, travelling the California Coast extensively, Don started writing for various regional publications, profiling winemakers, wineries and the wine lifestyle experience of California’s wine country, from Santa Barbara up through Napa.  What started as a hobby and pleasant pastime became a new vocation. Focusing mainly on Paso Robles, and the people that make this area so distinctive, Don has created a niche for himself as a writer, bringing these individual vignettes to life for his readers. While he writes about many of California's wineries and winemakers, his excitement about this area, its wines, people and friendships, keeps bringing him back to Paso Robles. He loves being an existential part of the community by being able to tell the stories that makes Paso Robles and these passionate wineartists so special. And Don has learned an important life lesson himself, “never say never, again.” Don Sonderling is a freelance writer covering California’s Wine Country lifestyle and culture, from Santa Barbara to Napa, while focusing on the Central Coast. He has earned his WSET2 certification from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, has completed the Bourgogne Masterclass through the Napa Valley Wine Academy and is a member of the LA.
